Check you batteries!

It’s that time of year again! With springtime and flying season just around the corner, this is a good time to check your batteries. I’m speaking mainly to those of you who fly glow and gas; you electric flyers are always on top of your batteries.

If your packs use NiMH or high-capacity NiCd cells then their lifetime is typically only about 3 years. If your packs use lower capacity NiCd cells (for example the 500 and 600 mAh packs that come with transmitters and receivers) then your packs may stay good for longer. Storing at a high temperature, charging at a high rate, leaving your pack constantly on charge, using an unreliable peak-detect charger, and other abuse will shorten your pack’s lifetime.

Cycle your pack and get a capacity reading. If the capacity is less than 80% of the rated capacity then you should replace the pack. After a full charge, let the pack just sit for about 5 days. Then cycle it and see how much capacity was lost through self discharge. If the pack loses more than 15% in 5 days then replace it.

Of course, before each flight everyone should check their receiver’s voltage using a loaded voltmeter and their transmitter’s voltage using the transmitter’s built in voltage indicator or readout.

Our December meeting will be on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. at the Northampton Township / Bucks County Municipal Authroity meeting room in Richboro, PA.  The agenda includes election of our 2009 club officers.

Next meeting Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Our November 2008 meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 4 (Election Day) at 8:00 p.m. at the Municipal Authority meeting room in Richboro, PA.  We will be taking nominations for our 2009 club officers at this meeting.  If you are unable to make the meeting and would like to make a nomination, please submit your nomination (or second) by email or phone.

Next Meeting Tuesday, October 7 at the Municipal Authority

Our next meeting will be at 8:00 p.m. on TUESDAY, October 7, 2008 at the Northampton Township/Bucks County Municipal Authority meeting room in Richboro.   Note the change to our winter meeting day and location.  We will be meeting on the first Tuesday of the month at the Municipal Authority from October through May, 2009.

Next Meeting Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 At The Field

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 3 at sunset (about 7:30 p.m.) at the flying field. Be sure to come early and bring something to fly! Visitors are always welcome!

Fun Fly on Sunday August 17, 2008

We’re having a Fun Fly on Sunday, August 17 at our field starting at about 1:00 p.m. To make things more interesting, Dave and Jack will invent some entertaining ‘competitive’ events. We’ll be sure to have contests that are fun for both beginners and experienced pilots. Visitors are always welcome!

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at our flying field at about 8:30 p.m.  Come early and bring something to fly!   Visitors are always welcome.

July Meeting Minutes

We had what must have been record attendance at the July meeting. Cars were lined up along the full length of the main runway and then some. The wind was a bit gusty but it calmed down for us around 7:30 for an hour of great flying before the meeting started. The field is in excellent shape. The weed killer that we applied this spring seems to be working and this year’s rolling did a particularly good job. Continue reading July Meeting Minutes…
